Copal Resin: Copal resin is one of the most ancient and sacred incense. It was first discovered by the Maya Indians and has remained sacred. Even to this day once the Copal is placed on the shrine; it may not be touched with the human hand. It is believed to be nourishment to the gods, a token of gratitude. This can be seen in an ancient Kekchi Mayan prayer which reads (in reference to copal):

“Though what I have brought along

For you to eat, for you to drink,

Is neither good nor much,

Nevertheless my words, my

Thoughts are these, O mother, O father.”
